Some Surprising Results of Another Same-Sex Marriage Survey

Prof. Mark Regnerus, of the University of Texas at Austin, known for his controversial study that concluded children do better with both a mother and a father, as opposed to two same-sex parents, has recently conducted another study.  If his results are accurate, this is strong evidence that the LGBT community has little or no interest in maintaining the ideals of marriage.  Especially striking is the "No-strings-attached sex is OK" result of gay and lesbian non-Christians, who agree with this: 80.5%.  This is an astonishing percentage, and one that does not encourage the much healthier alternative of monogamy.  Time will only tell if Regnerus' study stands up to scrutiny.

  1. Of course, this doesn't get talked about. A little too soon, I imagine.

The actual statistics on the number of same-sex relationships (I think even marriages?) that are 'open marriages' are, from what I've seen, absurdly high. Upwards of 50%.

As I told a progressive Christian who said that monogamy was all that mattered - if that was the case, they would clearly have to condemn the majority of same-sex relationships right now, straightaway. And yet, who will?

  2. Crude, I think you're spot on. I predict a collapse of the institution of marriage, which will allow polygamous marriage, incestual marriage, and so forth. There really is a slippery slope, and I expect the U.S. to eventually adopt a libertarian policy on marriage, in which no marriage is legally recognized. This will then result in an acknowledgement of marriage between one man and one woman, given the incentive to procreate. History runs in cycles, and I don't think the issue of marriage is any different.

I must say I have difficulty understanding just what exactly you are trying to argue for here.
Of course somebody, Christian or not, who thinks 'open marriages' or 'open relationships' are wrong would have to condemn the majority of SS relationships straightaway, provided your percentage is correct. But that person would also have to condemn lots of heterosexual relationship and marriages.
I simple have no idea what any of this has to do with the issue of same-sex marriages. Judging by the number of marriages ending in divorce, I fear that it is not only the LGBT community that has little or no interest in maintaining the ideals of marriage.
I would also like to point out that the 'LGBT community', just like any other 'community' is composed of individual people with individual opinions on matters. Morevover, 19.5% of the LGBT community do seem to want to maintain the ideals of marriage. Don't you think allowing them to marry would be a good idea?

  4. Walter, we have no idea of predicting who these 19.5% of the LGBT community are, so it's not as if we can see into the future and simply allow them to marry. Are there problems with traditional marriages? Of course, but the percentages are vastly different. Moreover, we have the additional reasons to limit marriage to one man and one woman, but we've already gone over those.

  5. If we should be able to see into the future before we can allow someone to marry, then nobody should be allowed to marry.
Although I don't agre with some of your additional reasons, I admit that they are worth considering. The Regnerus study on the other hand may be interesting for many reasons, but it is completely irrelevant to the issue of allowing or not allowing SSM.
